  • In physics history, Zeeman effect experiment is an important experiment which is found by the Dutch physicist Pieter Zeeman in 1896. When light source was laid in the external magnetic field, each spectra from the light source will be split into several spectrum which are with slightly different Polarization spectrum waves for each other.

Zeeman found the phenomenon, and very soon at that time which was explained by H.A.Lorents. They two won the 1902 Nobel Prize for physics. Zeeman Effect includes the normal Zeeman effect and abnormal Zeenman effect. Later Stern- Gerlach proposed electroic spinning hypothesis to explain Zeenman effect amply.

As relative energy level data can be obtained from Zeeman Effect experimentation, the calculation of Ratio of Charge to Mass of Electron is as one of important ways for the study of the energy level structure. The effect is the 3rd example of magnetic field affecting light after Faraday Effect and Kerr Effect. The effect makes people have more knowledge to spectrum of material, the atoms and molecules. It is also one of three famous physics experiments in modern history, viz.Stern Gerlach Experiment, alkali metals double line and Zeeman Effect. It provides the experiment data to prove directly space quantization and plays an important role on the development of the quantum theory.
