Alcohol is a drug. To Hear teenagers comment that they "don't use drugs" when they "only use alcohol" is are a serious misconception. What is interesting is that, statistically, teenagers are aware that alcohol is one of the most destructive drugs on the market, it is partly because it is not an illegal substance and, it leads to lifelong health problems, even death.

For many of these teenagers, there is at least one parent in the home that consumes alcohol on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it can be this one parent who will show the teenager the first taste of alcohol and often begin the bad effect into a life of alcohol abuse.

Teenagers are not always familiar withthe physiological changes associated with alcohol consumption. Many will drink in excess to such a degree so as to move from a state of relaxation and reduced anxiety into a state of drunkenness.

Many teens, at a state of drunkenness, will get into a vehicle and begin driving, eventually hurting not only themselves but others on the road.

Statistically, female underage drinkers are just as common as male underage drinkers. Additionally, medical and psychological research has shown that early underage drinking can lead to lifetime habits which include drinking, ultimately stumping emotional and intellectual development. In fact, it is believed that many underage drinkers, when exposed to chronic and binge drinking on a regular basis, will often remain emotionally stagnant at the age in which they began drinking. That is to say, girls who begin drinking at age 15, and continue to chronically drink alcohol, will continue to grow and develop physically but emotionally will always remain in the mindset of a 15 year old teenage girl. Research into this phenomenon on the pause in emotional maturity, and the relationship to underage alcohol consumption, is ongoing.

As our children prepare for high school and college, it is important that we educate them in the risks of underage drinking, emotionally, physiologically and intellectually. With support from parents, coupled with a level of monitoring by educators, many of our teenagers may avert the risk of underage drinking and live full and product lives without the associated health complications.
