One of the difficulties in constructing large span bridges is foundation engineering. In the construction of the lower structures of Ma Cha He bridge, the major challenges are: the design of floating drilling deck, the design and construction of cofferdams surrounding the steel sheet piles, quality control during the construction of bored piles, temperature control during large volume concrete pours and the maintenance thereafter, design calculation for the temporal scaffolding in the cast-in-situ of starting segment. This paper describes the solutions and implementation guidelines for these challenges, and provides some theoretical calculation to prove the soundness of this project.
